Brazos Bend State Park, Feb 8, 2025
Yesterday, 20 members of the Rio Brazos Audubon Society drove to Brazos Bend State Park (BBSP). Karen Davis and I acted as trip leaders. A big thank you to others (e.g., Jeffrey ward) who have better ears and eyes than us for helping the group see birds we might have missed otherwise.
We arrived at the park a little before 8 am. We walked 40 Acre Lake, had lunch there, and then drove to Elm Lake, and a subset of our group walked around that lake. We walked approximately 3.85 miles yesterday. We departed the park about 1:30 pm and arrived home in B/CS about 3:30 pm.
We listed approximately 60 species at BBSP. I’m happy to say everybody saw Limpkins. They were vocalizing (quite loudly) around 40 Acre Lake, and we were able to get the scope on one. Another bird of note was an American Bittern. This bird, too, we were able to see through our spotting scopes.
A Bald Eagle showed up during lunch. Very nice. A subset of our group saw a Black-headed Grosbeak. We were alerted to the presence of this bird as we walked through the picnic area at 40 Acre Lake.
In general, the birds we saw were very cooperative. There were just a few species seen by a only handful of participants.
I have attached a link that provides an incomplete list of birds seen (e.g., it does not include the Black-headed Grosbeak). Thank you Lauren Stranahan for keeping the eBird for the day.
